A handmade Kumiko panel is a work of art that can stop you in your tracks. Kumiko is a traditional Japanese technique that involves creating intricate lattice patterns using thin cedar strips. The technique requires great precision and patience, with artisans taking hours to chisel and fit the pieces together. A Canadian maker was inspired to create a 3D printed version of a Kumiko panel using a 3D printer. The printed panel is made up of 48 core panels, 32 inner borders, 32 outer borders, 124 seam covers, and 1,028 patterned inserts. The panel took 196 hours to print and used 5,150 grams of filament. The maker used a parametric file to create the panel, which allows for customization and scalability. The printed panel is a modern take on a traditional technique, and its beauty and intricacy are reminiscent of the original Kumiko panels.
